Canoeing (Coogoorah Park)

Canoeing is fun but calm, exciting but safe. Based out of the YMCA boat shed at the far end of Coogoorah Park (a ten-minute walk from the camp), this activity takes place in the sheltered, flat water environment on the Anglesea River and estuary.

Participants learn canoeing skills as well as focusing on cooperation and communication between co-paddlers. The session will constitute a fun (games, races, etc.) exploration of the environment (peat swamp, estuary, history of the park, river habitat) and paddling technique (skills, drills and safety). Stroke! Stroke! Fun!

Canoe survivor

Ready to take your canoeing skills to the next level? Canoe survivor is a point-scoring challenge that requires participants to problem-solve and demonstrate teamwork skills while working against the clock.

Supervised swimming

What better way to make the most of the camp’s close proximity to the beach then to take a supervised dip in the ocean and have fun in the sand? Enough said!

Raft building

Ever wondered how you would build a raft? Groups are required to construct a raft using an array of materials provided. This challenging activity tests teamwork and communication skills.

Open Water Learning Program

The Open Water Learning Experience (OWLE) sees the YMCA working in partnership with Life Saving Victoria to teach children important lifesaving skills in open water environments.

Part of the State Government’s ‘Play it safe by the water’ campaign, this fun and educational program includes activities designed to build confidence while developing skills such as danger awareness (dry activities), body boarding skills, rescue skills, and personal flotation. Participants are provided with a rash vest for swimming (wetsuits are not provided).

Yabbying (available September through April inclusive)

Participants can enjoy a short 30-minute bushwalk out to a dam nearby the camp and learn about yabbying. Each yabby caught will be measured for the record books before being released. Awards are given for the smallest and biggest catch and we provide lines, bait and hand nets.

Beach carnival

Beach games are the best type of games! This activity lets participants get involved in a variety of fun surf-oriented games in the sand.
